Before the Conversation Begins

The hardest part of a difficult conversation is often not
knowing what to say.

Someone questions a decision you made. Challenges something you believe. Misunderstands your intentions. Says something about your family, your work, your faith, your politics, or the kind of person you believe yourself to be.

Before you have time to think, something in you may already be preparing to defend, withdraw, correct, smooth over, or win.

That reaction tells you something important has been touched.

Solid Ground helps you recognize that moment earlier, understand what you are protecting, and create enough room to choose your response.

What You’ll Practice

Six foundations for a more grounded you

01

Find the Ground Beneath Being Right

Separate your worth from your opinions, roles, and record of being right.

02

Tell Yourself the Truth Without Contempt

Face mistakes honestly without turning them into a verdict on your value.

03

Choose the Person You Want to Be

Clarify the values and qualities you want to bring into difficult moments.

04

Return to Choice Under Pressure

Recognize your body’s signals and create enough pause to choose your response.

05

Recognize and Interrupt Your Protective Patterns

Understand the familiar moves you use to protect yourself and practice a better one.

06

Own What Is Yours. Repair What You Can. Learn.

Take responsibility for your part, repair where you can, and release what you cannot control.

The Human Flourishing Lens

Agency · Hope · Optimism

Agency

What can I notice, choose,
practice, or repair?

Your next choice is still yours.

Hope

What path remains open,
even if the outcome is uncertain?

Different responses can be learned and practiced.

Optimism

What evidence shows that growth, understanding, or a better next step is possible?

Each time you respond differently, you create evidence that change is already happening.

You don’t need to become unshakable.
You need a way to return.

Solid Ground is meant to be worked through, written in, revisited, and practiced in real life.

Across the workbook, you’ll identify what activates you, recognize the patterns you reach for, clarify how you want to show up, and develop practices that make those intentions more available when you need them.

Part of Something Larger

Solid Ground comes before dialogue for a reason

The Practice of Dialogue asks us to stay open when identity, belonging, fear, conviction, and disagreement enter the room.

That outward work begins with the person entering the conversation.

Solid Ground helps you understand what you protect, what you fear, how you react, and how to return to choice when being understood, approved of, or proven right is not guaranteed.

From there, the Practice turns outward: listening beyond labels, examining assumptions, asking better questions, speaking honestly, and allowing disagreement to help us see more clearly.
