How Much Is Enough?

Does wanting more help us flourish, or keep us from ever having enough?

Wanting more can fuel ambition, enterprise, innovation, and progress. It can also make “enough” feel permanently out of reach. This Circle explores the tension between aspiration and contentment, and asks what progress is ultimately for.

Why this question

Much of human progress begins with wanting something better. A better tool. A better life. A better opportunity for our children. Ambition, enterprise, innovation, and exchange have expanded human possibility in extraordinary ways.

Wanting more can be deeply generative. It can call forth creativity, effort, risk, and discovery. But “more” can also become a destination that keeps moving. More money, more achievement, more security, more recognition, more choices. At some point, the capacity to pursue more can become the inability to experience enough.

The challenge is not choosing between ambition and contentment. It is understanding what each is for. Can we preserve the energy that creates progress while becoming better at recognizing when progress has given us something worth protecting?

The question

One more question worth carrying

Can ambition and contentment live together?
