Why This Question

Principles are meant to give us something sturdier than convenience.

Honesty matters most when lying would be easier. Courage matters when speaking carries a cost. Loyalty matters when leaving would benefit us. Fairness matters when applying it disadvantages our own side. If we keep our commitments only when they are painless, they are not guiding us very much.

But there is another danger. A principle formed for good reasons can become rigid. New information may reveal consequences we did not anticipate. What once seemed clearly right may, in practice, be harming people. From the inside, refusing to reconsider can feel like integrity. From the outside, it can begin to look like stubbornness.

So the challenge is not simply whether we have principles. It is whether we know how to live with them honestly.

If we abandon them whenever they become costly, they were never much of a guide. If we refuse to examine them no matter what follows from them, we stop pursuing truth. The difficult work is learning to tell the difference between a cost that reveals a principle’s worth and a cost that reveals the need for deeper examination.
