What Deserves Your Attention?
How much of your attention is really yours to choose?
Our attention shapes what we notice, what we fear, what we value, and ultimately how we live. But in a world designed to capture it, choosing what deserves our attention may be harder—and more important—than we think.

Why This Question
Attention is one of the most basic forms of agency we have. What we repeatedly give our attention to begins to shape our sense of what matters, what is dangerous, what is possible, and even who we become.
But attention is also valuable, and a great many forces compete for it. News, social media, advertising, entertainment, work, and the devices we carry are extraordinarily good at keeping us looking. Fear, outrage, novelty, and comparison can command our attention before we have consciously decided they deserve it.
That creates a harder question than simply whether we should exercise more self-control. How much responsibility do we have for guarding our own attention when so much around us is deliberately designed to capture it? And what would it look like to build lives, technologies, workplaces, and communities that help us pay attention to what is actually worth seeing?
