Why this question

We are accustomed to saying that everyone gets to decide what a good life means for themselves. There is something important in that instinct. Human beings differ in temperament, circumstance, culture, belief, ambition, and desire. A life that feels deeply meaningful to one person may hold little appeal for another.

And yet we do not treat every question about human well-being as purely subjective.

We know that relationships matter. That chronic isolation carries costs. That agency, meaning, health, belonging, and the opportunity to contribute are associated with better lives. Philosophers and wisdom traditions have been asking what human beings need to live well for thousands of years, and modern research has added another source of evidence.

If some things really do help human beings flourish, then the good life may be more than preference alone.

But that raises a harder problem. Who gets to turn evidence about flourishing into a definition of how someone else ought to live? At what point does wisdom become prescription?

The tension is between taking seriously what we can learn about human flourishing and preserving the freedom to make a life our own.

Are there some ways of living that are genuinely better for human beings, or is the good life entirely ours to define?
